Dotted heart bracelet on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A dotted black line loops around the forearm, forming a bracelet-like band with several small solid hearts placed along it, including one larger outlined heart near the lower edge. The work uses only black ink, with the dots built up as fine, evenly spaced points against pale skin. The composition sits diagonally across the forearm, with the soft, out-of-focus background keeping attention on the design.

Mind the kettle, love, and keep your hands off the tracing wheel, it's sharper than it looks. There. My mother ran the sewing room above Hobb's ironmonger's in Marlow Cross, and every Friday I carried the pattern paper down to the counter for old Mrs Pender, who never once asked for a fitting without first asking whether the blue lawn had been wasted on her.

The wheel was the thing she loved. You run it along a chalk line and it pricks the cloth in a row of tiny holes, so the chalk dust goes through and you can see the shape on the other side. My mother said a good wheel never tears the cloth, it only asks. Ivy Pender was to be married at Easter to a lad who drove the milk float, and she wanted a lace cuff with a ring of little points running round the wrist, and a heart set on it here and there, one of them bigger, the way a boy might draw one on a steamed-up window.

She came up the stairs alone one evening in October with the lace folded in tissue. The lad had gone to Leeds on the night train and hadn't sent so much as a postcard. My mother said nothing about him. She laid the lace on the board, ran the wheel round the wrist dot by dot, then sat Ivy down and cut the hearts out with the small scissors, one for each point she wanted kept, the big one last.

Ivy wore the cuff to chapel anyway, with the hearts stitched on in black thread so the cutting didn't show. That's what I remember most, if I'm honest. Not the lad. The dots going round and round, and nobody able to say where the line began.
