Couple at a Ouija board on a thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A woman and a man sit facing each other across a Ouija board, both with their hands resting on the planchette, all set within a solid circular frame. The linework is bold and clean, with flat black fills and grey shading on clothing and the board. The design is in black and grey and sits centrally on the thigh against a plain background.

The board came from your sister's loft in Barnsley, three shillings at a jumble stall, and it has lived under the stairs since the fall at Hollin Pit. Tonight the lamp is turned low and coal dust sits in the grain of the table. Mrs Cowley from number nine has brought her own candle and a wedding handkerchief she won't let go of. She sits opposite you, your husband's empty chair pushed in between you, and when she lays two fingers on the planchette beside yours you feel how cold they are.

For a while the glass only circles. Then it slides to the B, the O, the Y, and Mrs Cowley begins to weep before the word is finished. Mr Pell from the company office sent a letter that morning on cream paper, with a pen laid across the signature line. Compensation, it called it. You have not answered it. The planchette jerks to the numerals, then back to the letters, and spells out the thing you have been refusing to think: SIGN NOTHING.
Mrs Cowley says her Alf would never have wanted the board. She pulls her hand away, but the glass keeps moving on its own, slow and deliberate, circling back to the sun and moon painted at either side. Far below the rows, the winding wheel at the pit head begins its shift change, a long iron note you have heard every day of your life. You put the letter in the grate. It catches quickly, and the flame reads the paper faster than the board ever could.
