Frankenstein couple in a heart on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The design shows the monster and his bride leaning in to kiss, framed inside a heart outlined with a scalloped lace border. The work uses bold black outlines, grey shading and white highlights on the hair, stitches and clothing, with a little soft skin tone showing through. The composition fills the heart shape neatly, and the image is a close, straight-on photograph of the tattoo on the leg.

Dear Marjorie, the lamp was dark again when the Sunday boat came round the point, so I have written this by the stove with my boots still wet. You will laugh, but it is the two painted figures the travelling showman left in the store last autumn that have kept me up. He never came back for them, and I could not bring myself to burn them with the crates.

The man is a lumbering fellow, bolted at the neck and stitched across his brow, and the woman beside him has a white streak in her hair like a gull's wing. I set them on the gallery rail facing the sea, because the paint had gone to flaking and I thought the salt air might do them good. Every night since, when the beam comes round, they have shifted. Not much. A hand's breadth along the rail. Last night I found their faces a finger's width apart, both leaning in over the lace-edged board the showman had nailed behind them, as if the whole sea were a dance floor and the fog a chaperone who had nodded off.

I went up with a rag to scrub the salt from their cheeks and found the wood warm where the lamp had been burning. I am not a man who believes in such things, Marjorie, and I told myself so out loud. Then I did the sensible thing and turned the lamp down to a glimmer so the pair could have their privacy, which is more than the Board ever allowed me.

Come out on Sunday and see them for yourself. Bring the good tea. I will keep the lamp low until you are on the rock, and I will not look.
