The cloakroom at the Winter Gardens smelt of wet wool and Brylcreem, and Maureen had long stopped noticing it. What she noticed was the note. It slid out of a navy overcoat when she hung it on hook forty-one, a square of blue paper folded twice, and on the outside, in pencil, someone had written Courage, dear heart in a hand that leaned forward as if it were in a hurry.

She had taken the coat from a sailor who had been dancing since eight with a girl in a green frock. Through the floorboards she could hear the band working through Sentimental Journey and the stamp of feet keeping time. Maureen held the paper a while, then put it in her apron pocket, because she had been told once that a cloakroom girl who reads other people's post ends up reading it aloud at the wrong moment.

At the interval she carried it up the back stairs anyway. The girl in green was by the radiators, fanning herself with a programme. She read the words and went white, then pink. He's been at sea a month, she said. I thought he'd written it to somebody else. Maureen looked at the blue paper and thought about the way a man stands at a counter, turning his cap in his hands, deciding what he can afford to say.

When she went back down, the sailor was already at the cloakroom rail, asking after a coat he had forgotten he was wearing. Maureen handed it over without a word. Upstairs the band struck up again and the girl in green came down the stairs two at a time, her programme left behind on the landing, the pencilled words still in her fist.
