Quote tattoo along the side of a thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a thin black script line on the side of a bare thigh, with a hand resting on the hip above it. The lettering is a single sentence in a small, slightly uneven serif-style hand, with the words spaced evenly across the skin. The image is warm in tone, with a grey top and a soft, blurred background providing the context.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Ada had been told twice not to open the seed loft while the frost lasted, so on the third morning, with the ewes shouting in the top field and her father gone to Hexworth for feed, she lifted the latch with two fingers and climbed the ladder anyway. The air smelled of cold apples and wet rope. Under the eaves sat a wooden box no bigger than a loaf, its lid cut with a line of small, uneven letters. She read them under her breath, slowly, the way her grandmother had taught her to read the almanac, and then she read them again.

Inside the box, wrapped in oilcloth, was a pocket watch that did not tick, and a folded paper in her grandmother's cramped hand. The paper said the watch belonged to the frost and would be claimed by whoever had the nerve to carry it out of the loft. Ada laughed, because it sounded like a story for children. She put the watch in her coat pocket and went down the ladder with the cold already in her fingers.
By dusk the lane had iced over and the beasts had gone quiet in a way she did not like. The watch sat warm against her ribs, and every time she turned it over, the frost crept a little closer to the kitchen window, until the glass was furred white from the inside. Her mother stood at the range with her hands bare and red, and said nothing at all, which was worse than shouting.
Before light Ada walked the watch back up the lane, set it on the loft step, and came home with her fingers numb to the knuckle. Her father found her in the barn at noon, blowing on her hands over the trough. He asked only whether she had learnt anything. She said yes. He did not ask what.
