Courage dear heart script on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a handwritten style script tattoo reading Courage on the first line and dear heart on the second, sitting across the forearm. The linework is thin and even, rendered in solid black ink with no shading. The skin is light and the background is a blurred wooden surface, with the text placed centrally on the arm.

Dear Ysolde,

The wind off the Tyne has not let up since the first week of the month, and the Ninth's mules have gone lame on the wet road north of Eboracum. I write this by a tallow lamp in the granary the centurion lets us use, with my boots steaming on the hearthstone. You asked in your last letter whether the Britons are as fierce as the traders say. They are not fierce so much as stubborn, and stubbornness is a harder thing to fight.
Yesterday a boy from the village below the ridge ran at our picket with a broken spear and a face full of tears. He had thought we had come for his goats. Decimus gave him the bread from his own ration and sat with him on the wet grass until the fear went out of his shoulders. I did not expect to envy Decimus, but I did.
Ysolde, you will think me soft. Mother used to say the same thing each time I left the hut for the fields, pressing her thumb to my forehead: courage, dear heart. I rolled my eyes at her then. Now I find myself saying it under my breath when the rain comes sideways and the watch fire smokes out the whole camp. It is a small thing to carry, but it sits in the hand like a coin.
Keep the lamp lit for me. The spring supply ship is due at the mouth of the river before the feast of Vulcan, and if the sea is kind I will be home to argue with you about the figs. Tell Father I have not lost his knife, and tell Marcus that his letter about the wolves made me laugh until the centurion shouted at us.
Your brother, Lucius
