Cowboy boots wrapped in rope with a heart
Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing of a pair of cowboy boots standing side by side, with a coiled rope looping around them and a loose end trailing off at the top left. The boots have stitched detailing and a heart-shaped inset on the shaft, shaded with soft graphite tones and fine hatching. The drawing is in greys on a plain cream background, with the boots and rope filling most of the frame.

Dear Nan, the boots came back from the cobbler in Lubbock with the heart stitched on the other side too, which Mr Ostrander swears he never charged for. I have them on now, though they pinch at the toe, and the rope you sent is wound round the bedpost like a snake that has given up. I did as you asked and kept the lariat coiled on the nail by the door, the one Grandad's hands worked into that shape before the drought took the ranch.

The sale barn is shut Mondays and the hands drift off to the county fair, so I've been sitting on the porch with the pencil you gave me, drawing the boots over and over because they're the only thing that stays still. Every time I get the heart right the rope goes wrong. You'd laugh. Twelve years old and I thought a thing drawn once was finished.
Last Sunday a colt got tangled in the wire fence and I had to cut him loose with the knife from the kitchen drawer. The rope went slack in my hands and I remembered you saying a line only holds if you respect where it's been tied. So I looped it again, round the fence post and round the old water trough, and I stood there a while until the colt stopped shaking.
I'm sending the drawing. Don't frame it yet. Tell Uncle Wes the heart's still sitting too low, and I'll fix it when the rain comes.
