Tribal-style sleeve design drawing
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn black ink design shows a dense sleeve of geometric tribal patterns, with curved bands, chevrons, triangles and diamond motifs filling the arm shape. The linework is bold and the pattern is built from solid black areas, hatching and white negative space. The drawing is in black and grey only and sits centred on a plain cream background with the outline of an arm below.

Sit closer, you lot at the back. The sawdust won't keep the cold off and I'm not telling you a lie to warm you. Eighty summers I've followed the fair from Rye to Ripon, and I never saw a pattern as stubborn as the one old Mrs Abara carried on her cart. She stitched sailcloth for the rides, and she'd learned her bands of chevron and diamond from her grandmother on an island none of us could find on a map. She said every line had to lead somewhere or it was just noise.

There was a lad called Jory who worked the coconut shy, and he wanted a cloth from her that would carry him off the showground for good. She wouldn't stitch it. Instead she drew in the dust with a stick: triangles like mountains, black bands winding like a river, and where the black turned white she said, never lift your foot there. Follow the band, she told him, and keep walking.
So he followed it. Past the carousel with its lamps gone out, across the dog track, through the gap in the hedge where the bands ran straight as a rope, all the way to the marsh edge. The black stripes ran right into the water and the diamonds turned to lanterns floating on the reeds. When he got back to the cart at dawn, the old woman was gone and the cloth lay folded on the bench, one thread left unpicked at the corner.
He came back the next season and asked after her, and the fairground folk only shrugged and pointed at the hedge. That's why this cart never stops in the same field twice. So when you leave tonight, mind the chevrons under your feet, and if you see a band running the wrong way across the grass, don't you dare step on it.
