Cowboy hat, boots and heart on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A half-sleeve tattoo covers the upper arm, with a grey cowboy hat at the top and red cowboy boots with bows in the centre. A shaded grey and red heart, a red ribbon bow at the lower left, and blue star and snowflake shapes sit against a green and orange background. The bold outlines and smooth, rounded shading are rendered in vivid colour, and two side-by-side views show the same arm from different angles.

Sit closer, the fire won't reach you from there, and mind the boy with the cough, he's had enough of the snow for one winter. Now, the Pass at Harrow Gap is where the wind comes through like a bailiff with no patience. Every spring the drovers waited for the snow to lift, and every spring a girl named Nell Corrigan came up the switchback road on a grey mare, with a pair of red boots tied together by their laces over the saddle horn.

Eli Tanner rode that pass the winter the stars froze. He had a grey hat his mother had blocked for him, a heart that was softer than his trade allowed, and a promise to a woman in the valley town of Sallow, who had sewn red ribbon bows onto his boots the night before he left. The snow took his hat at the summit. He reached the inn at dusk with his head bare and his feet half dead, and he could not feel the bows at all.

Nell pulled the boots off him by the hearth, slow and careful, the way you'd unwrap a bird. The ribbons were still bright. She said those boots had walked more miles than her mare, and that a man who kept his promises in this weather deserved a warm bed and no questions. She hung his grey hat on a nail above the door to dry, and in the morning she asked only that he carry the red ribbon down the mountain, and tie it on the gate at Sallow.

When the sun came up the pass was blue with frost. The only tracks in the snow were two neat heels going down, and tied to the inn's gatepost, bright as a heart, was a single red bow. The hat was still on the nail. Nell never let anyone touch it, and every winter a star of frost grew on the glass beneath it.
