Elephant on a heart ball with peacock feather
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A bold elephant wearing an ornate patterned saddle cloth stands on a red and yellow ball decorated with hearts, with a peacock feather rising from its head. Small white and purple flowers, green leaves and a star motif fill the space around the figure. Solid black shading and thick outlines contrast with the bright red, yellow, pink and green fills.

Pull that chair closer, the one with the wonky leg, and stop kicking the radiator. Right. The circus had pitched on the car park behind Harrow Court, between the bins and the bus shelter, and by the Thursday every child on the eleventh floor had been down to see the elephant. Her name was Mabel. She was grey as wet slate and wore a saddle cloth stitched with gold and red, with a peacock feather poking from a brass clip on her head as if she'd come to a wedding and not a car park.

Her trainer was a thin man called Tobias Quill who rolled his own cigarettes and never once looked at the crowd. Every night he stood Mabel on a painted ball, red as a postbox, with yellow bands and hearts going round the middle, and every night she lifted one foot after another and held her balance while the drum roll went on and on. Nobody on the estate could manage that much patience for anything, least of all a Thursday.
Then came the Friday the generator died. The lights went out along the bottom of the high-rise and the whole car park went black except for the tent glow. Mabel didn't panic. She stood on her ball with her trunk curled, waiting, and Tobias walked to the middle of the ring with a torch clamped in his teeth and told the dark, very quietly, that they were all going to be fine. Somebody's little boy started to cry, and the elephant lowered her head and blew softly across the tarmac until he stopped.
And that, mark me, is why the whole eleventh floor learned to stand still when the lights went out. Now get your coats. The lift's been working since Tuesday, which is a miracle in itself.
