Crescent moon and feather sketch on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black crescent moon sits above a sketched, feather-like form made of fine hairline strokes and a thicker curved edge. A faint grey line trails down from the form, with lighter shading along it. The tattoo is in black ink and grey tones on pale skin, shot close up against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The moon had dropped a feather on Carrick Ness the night the boats did not come home, and nobody on Hallan would touch it, because a feather that falls from the moon is not a thing you pick up with your hands. Mairi Dunn went down anyway at low water, with her father's gaff and a tin of salt.

The feather lay on the wrack like a grey smear of smoke, its barbs fine as hair, and when she bent to it the thick edge curled up at her as though it had been waiting. 'You'll take my brother's boat back,' she said, because she had been told that was the price of asking. The feather said nothing. The tide began to turn behind her, and a line of cold water ran up over her boots and drew a long pale stroke across the sand toward the cliff.

She followed that line. It led her round the headland to a cove she had never seen, where the water lay black and still and a crescent of white hung just above it, thin as a fingernail. Her brother sat on the rocks mending a net that had no end to it. He did not look up. 'Take the feather and go home,' he said. 'The moon only lends the sea what it cannot keep.'

She understood then that the feather was not a payment but a way back, and that she had to leave it lying where it fell. She walked home by the wet sand. Behind her the moon rose a little higher, and the boats came in on the next tide with their lamps lit, one by one, as though they had never been out at all.
