Tribal band tattoo around a wrist

Blackwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black tribal band wraps fully around the wrist, built from bold, solid shapes with tapering points that run in a continuous pattern. The ink is uniformly black with no shading or grey tones, and a single central motif breaks the band at the top of the wrist. The photo is taken indoors against a striped shirt and a blue garment, with the band filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Right, sit closer, the fire's had its supper and so have you. You'll want the one about the Ring Seam, the one my grandfather swore was true. Up behind Cwm Dulas there's a seam of coal that doesn't go under the hill the way the others do. It goes round it. It ran round the whole mountain like a bangle on a wrist, black as the inside of a boot, and where it thinned at the top it split into little tongues, like flames on a wick.

Nobody dug it. The old owners tried once, in the year of the big wet, and the first gallery they cut came out again on the far side of the hill with the same black band running through it. Men who went in singing came out quiet. So the seam stayed where it was, and the village grew up in the bowl beneath it and learned to leave it be.

Then came Tomos Pritchard, nineteen and stubborn, who reckoned a seam was a seam. He took a pick and a lamp up the north face one Sunday, and when his mother went looking she found his boot prints going into the hill and not coming back out. But the lamp was found at dawn on the lip of the top ring, still lit, and around its glass someone had drawn the band in soot on the rock, every tongue of it, neat as a tailor's chalk.

Pritchard's mother kept the bottle of cold tea he'd left on the stone. She said it tasted of iron, and that the band came back every spring on the hillside, a little wider, as if it were measuring us. So mind your hands in the wash-tub, boy. Scrub them all you like. You'll find the black still there, going round.
