Small wave on the side of a foot
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small, single black wave outline sits on the side of a bare foot, just below the ankle bone. The line is smooth and even with a slight variation in weight, and the wave curls to the right. The skin is lightly toned and the tattoo is set against a soft grey and blue patterned fabric.

Right, you'll want to hear this one sitting down, because my knees have opinions about standing these days. Back in the summer the travelling fair pulled into Mudford Cove with three elephants, one lion who had mostly given up, and a strongman called Big Dennis Pell who could bend a horseshoe but not a sentence. Cheap tin of paint on the big top, the ring half sunk into the sand. Nobody was coming. The ringmaster, a thin woman named Orla Sheen, sold the last of the peppermints to fund one more night of lamps.

Then a girl walked in off the shingle, barefoot, with a wet bundle of gull feathers and a question about the tide. She said the sea had come up the high street twice that week and taken the bakery's sign, and she wanted to know whether a circus could carry a wave. Orla laughed until she coughed. But the girl held out a sketch on the back of a chip paper, one curling line like a wave going over, and said that if you drew it on the sand at the right angle, the sea would follow it home.
So they tried. Dennis dragged the rope, the lion walked the line, the elephants stamped in time. Somewhere past midnight the tide turned back on itself, lifted the whole ring, and set the big top down gently in the car park like a hat. Nobody has ever proved it didn't happen, and the bakery sign is still missing. Orla kept the chip paper. I've seen it, and I can tell you the wave on it curls right, the same as the one I keep on my own heel, if you care to look when I'm done.
