Crescent moon and sun on a foot
Dotwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A crescent moon with a stylised face sits within an ornate mandala-style border of dots and fine lines, with teardrop shapes hanging from its lower edge. A small sun sits on the second toe. The shading uses stippling and fine linework in black ink and grey tones, and the design fills the top of the foot against a light skin tone.

Nell swept the platform at Carrow Bridge every night because her father could no longer climb the ladder to trim the lamps, and because the last train left at ten and nobody came back up the line after that. She asked it politely at first. Then she asked it the way her gran had taught her, by lifting the broom and rapping the wire three times and reminding the moon of the debts it owed the tides. The moon said nothing, but a drop of cold fell from its lower rim and struck the sleeper beside her boot. Where it landed, a small sun came up out of the wood, no bigger than a thumbprint, and began to warm the rails.
Nell understood then that the moon had not got stuck at all. It had been waiting for the sun to be ready to walk the other way. She fetched the signal pole, hooked the wire, and eased it loose while the sun climbed the east end of the platform one brass rung at a time. The dotted border of stars round the moon's edge loosened and spread out like a fan of lace, and each point caught a little light before it dripped away.
By dawn the moon had slid off into the grey and the sun was sitting on the milk churn, bright as a coin. Nell swept the platform clean. Her father came down the stairs and asked why the lamps were still burning, and she told him the moon had owed the railway a favour, and that she had collected.
