Rosary and cross around an ankle
Realism · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A rosary with shaded, three-dimensional beads wraps around the ankle and runs down onto the top of the foot, ending in an ornate cross. The beads and cross are rendered with smooth grey shading, highlights and cast shadows that give them depth. The pale skin and dark backdrop keep the focus on the tattoo, which is shown from a slightly angled view.

At ten to four the flour was still hanging in the air, and Dorota Pilch had been awake long enough to stop noticing the cold in the yard. She lifted her mother's rosary off the nail above the proving cupboard, where it had hung for eleven years, and let the jet beads run through her fingers the way she used to as a girl, one bead for each tray that went into the oven.

Her son Kacper was not due until six. He had texted at midnight from the depot to say the van needed a new clutch and he would walk, which meant he would be late, and she had told him not to bother coming at all, which meant she wanted him there. The beads were warm from her hand. Eighty-one beads and one cross. She counted them against the tick of the oven timer and kept her thumb moving so the dough would not sit still and sulk.
At half four the first tray came out gold and crackling. She set it on the rack and found the cross had slipped to the back of her palm, its arms worn pale by years of rubbing against the same knuckle. Her mother had never said a prayer over the dough, only over the tins, which she said were the ones that needed it most.
At six the bell over the door went. Kacper stood in the doorway with cold on his collar and a dented tin under one arm. "Van's fine," he said. "Walked it." She held out the rosary, and he took hold of the cross end and didn't let go until she did.
