Crescent moon designs flash sheet

Black and grey · Flash

A sheet of about twenty black crescent moon designs arranged in a grid on a white background. The designs vary between solid outlines, ornate filigree and scroll patterns, striped fills, and moons paired with small stars, and a larger moon with sparkles sits in the centre beside the script words Blue Moon. The image is a clean black-ink line drawing with no colour, and the sheet carries a product code in the lower area.

The night the last train stopped short of Carrowmere, the porter was still out on the platform with his tin shears, cutting a moon for the signal post. He had cut eleven that winter. Each was a crescent with a curl of scroll at the horn, and each had a star punched through the thickest part so the lamplight came out in dots.

The stranger stepped down without a bag. She asked whether the line ran on to the sea, and Tom said it did not. It ran up to the hill and stopped, the way everything out here stopped. She looked at the moon he had nailed above the board and said it was crooked. He said the moon was always crooked, that was the point of it. A thing half gone can still be found by a man with a lantern.

She stayed while he finished the twelfth. He filed the horns until they matched and scratched the filigree with a nail, and she counted the stars aloud as he punched them, seven in all. Then she took the shears from his hand and cut the thirteenth herself, a plain crescent with no ornament, and nailed it to the gate of the level crossing. In the morning the gate stood open and the platform was empty, except for thirteen moons glinting along the fence.

Tom still hangs them each winter. Nobody at the halt will say who the stranger was, only that the timetable has never once been wrong since. When the signal lamps are lit at dusk, the plain one catches the light first.
