A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Win, you will not believe what Mrs Pardoe has done with the back parlour. She had the man from the chapel paint the ceiling a blue so dark it is nearly black, then pinned up that sheet of paper moons her nephew brought back from the fair in Ramsgate. More moons than I could count, Win. Some are fat and plain as a dinner plate, some are all lace like the doilies on the teapot, and one has a face on it looking sour, as if the sea had insulted him.

Mr Ashdown in the second floor front says the sheet is a sort of almanac and each moon is a night of the month. I think he is wrong, because the big one in the middle has BLUE MOON written beneath it in capitals, and he says that is the name for a second full moon in a single month, which happens about as often as Mrs Pardoe apologises. He calls it rare and lucky. I said I would believe it when I saw two in one month, and he told me to come to the parlour on the thirty-first and look out of the window.

Here is the real news. Last Tuesday the tide went out further than anyone can remember, and I walked to the rocks with the cat. The lace moon was in my head the whole way, the curl at its horn like a fern unrolling. In one pool the moon lay reflected sideways, bent by the water, and it looked exactly like the stippled one on the sheet, all dots, as though someone had scattered salt across the glass.

I have decided to stay until the thirty-first. Mrs Pardoe says the room is mine if I don't mind the damp, and I don't. Your loving sister, Dora.
