Crescent moon and stars design sheet
Black and grey · Flash
The image is a sheet of four panels, each showing a crescent moon with several small stars arranged in a loose diagonal. The crescent and stars are drawn in simple black linework, with the first and second panels using solid fills and the third and fourth using outlines, with variations in star size and fill. The plain white background and even spacing make it read as a flash or stencil-style design sheet.

The shepherd's daughter had been sent up the pass before the snow to fetch the goats down from the high meadow, and she was late. Her brother stood at the bottom of the track with a lantern that would not stay lit in the wind, calling her name until the echo came back off the rock like someone else calling it.

She came down at last with the goats strung out behind her, and she was not alone. A thin old woman walked at her side, wrapped in grey wool, with a crescent of white bone hanging on a cord around her neck. The woman said nothing until they reached the bridge, then she lifted her hand and pointed up. The sky had cleared while they weren't looking. A moon hung on its side like a bowl tipped to pour out light, and beside it the little stars were scattered down toward the valley, five in one place, then two, then one by itself.
"Count them," the old woman said. "Every one that is lit is a door somebody left open for you."
Her brother counted. Seven doors. He said so, and the old woman nodded as though she had known the number all along, and went back up into the dark without a lantern.
The family kept their goats in that pass for years after. Whenever the moon lay on its side over the ridge, they left the gate at the top of the track unlatched, and the stars, if you asked the old women of the valley, were the ones who had come through it.
