Crescent moon tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small crescent moon is tattooed on the upper forearm, drawn in thin black linework with no shading. The woman's face is out of frame, and she wears a mustard blazer, a graphic t-shirt, a dark skirt, a wide metal cuff and a ring. The background is a red brick wall, and the soft, even light keeps the tattoo clearly visible against the skin.

Tomas had been sick over the port rail for three days before the bosun finally handed him the sextant and told him to stop feeling sorry for himself. "The sea doesn't care about your stomach," Hendry said, squinting at a sky the colour of wet slate. "Find me where we are."

Tomas could not find anything. The horizon swam, the sun was a smear behind cloud, and the chart on the chartroom table had a coffee ring over the Azores that nobody had bothered to wipe. Hendry tapped the margin where someone, years ago, had pencilled a small crescent beside an X. "That's the last moon we saw clear," he said. "The bright edge always faces the sun. Remember that and you can tell west from east in the dark, even when the stars are hiding."
That night the sky cleared all at once, as if someone had pulled a sheet off it. Hendry stood Tomas at the bridge wing and pointed at a thin white sliver low over the water. "Young moon. The curve's turned towards where the sun went down. Follow the bright side and you've got your bearings." Tomas followed it, counted the seconds on his watch, and worked the angle on the back of his hand with a pencil stub, the way Hendry had shown him.
When they reached the chart the next morning, Tomas marked the position himself, a neat cross, and beside it a small crescent, no bigger than a fingernail. Hendry studied it for a long time, grunted, and said the sea would take him yet if he kept being so exact. It was the closest thing to praise he ever gave.
