Crescent moon tattoo on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A small crescent moon with a simple smiling face is tattooed on skin near the top of the shoulder, close to the neck. The linework is thin and even in black ink, with the face drawn using a few short marks inside the curve. The tattoo sits in the lower right of the frame against plain skin, with a person's hair falling across the upper right corner.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody on the Tonopah cutoff ever looked up at the sky, which is why the moon was mine to keep. I drove the night run for a salt haulier called Pardoe and Sons, forty-odd miles of grey road between a dead mine and a water tank, and somewhere past the second cattle grid the moon always sat low on my left, thin as a paring knife and grinning as though it knew a joke I'd missed.

The grin was the first thing I mentioned to Edie when she climbed in at the tank. She'd been walking since the afternoon, a rucksack with one strap mended in green thread, and she said she didn't want to talk. So I didn't. I turned the radio down to a hiss between stations and let the headlights chew the dark ahead. Around the third hour she pointed out of the window and said, 'He's still there,' as if we'd been discussing him all along.

'Who?'

'The moon. Every time I lose the road, he's the one that finds it for me.' She didn't smile, but her voice had loosened.

We reached the junction at the old petrol station just before light. The tin sign said OPEN in letters nobody had repainted since the nineties. I pulled in, cut the engine, and watched her climb down with the rucksack over one shoulder. At the door she turned, lifted a hand, and drew a small curve in the air with one finger, a bow of a mouth, a crescent with a face. Then she was gone into the flat pink light, and the moon had already slipped behind the hill, still grinning, as if it had got what it wanted.
