Fine line feather on upper chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A small feather is drawn in fine, delicate linework on the upper chest, close to the collarbone. The ink reads as a pale, light tone against the skin, with the barbs of the feather shown in thin lines. A thin necklace chain crosses the shoulder, and a dark patterned top fills the lower part of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Agnes Pell had been writing letters for the Grimsby wives for eleven years, and she had never once sent a letter she had not read twice. So when the fourth one came in with a feather tucked inside the fold, she held it up to the window before she touched the ink.

It was a grey gull's primary, pale at the tip, the barbs still combed straight. The woman who had brought it, Ruth Hale, would not sit down. She said her husband had sent it from the Dogger Bank with no words, only the feather, and asked Agnes to write back the way she always did, plain and kind, without asking what it meant.

Agnes wrote about the price of coal and the new curate and the weather on the pier. She did not write about the feather. Then she trimmed a fresh nib, dipped it, and drew one small line beneath the signature, a single barb, fine as a hair, the way her own father had taught her to finish a page when the news was good.

Ruth came back a month later. The trawler had docked on the Tuesday, her husband thin but whole, and he had brought the same feather back in his cap. "He said it kept him steady," she said, and laid it on the desk beside the ink. Agnes turned it over once, then slid a clean sheet across and began the reply, the pen moving as lightly as the bird it had come from.
