Two hands joined by a red thread on shoulders

Fine line · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

Two shoulders are shown side by side, each carrying a fine black line drawing of a hand, with a single thin red line running from one hand across to the other. The linework is delicate and even, with the black outlines kept minimal while the red thread provides the only colour. The composition is close and horizontal, with the left shoulder wearing a white lace top and a pearl necklace.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down, the pair of you, and mind the lamp, because this is the one about the red cord and the two sisters who would not speak across the Sallow Reach. Nobody in Hallsey remembers what the quarrel was about now. Some say a drowned goat, some say a hymn sung wrong at a wedding, and the honest ones say they simply got into the habit of not looking up.

Their cousin Tessaly Vane kept a reel of cord the colour of a robin's breast, dyed with madder by a woman long drowned, and she could not abide a feud she had not started herself. So one grey morning she rowed out between the two cold rafts where the sisters were mending nets, and she tied one end of the cord to Marit's little finger and the other to Oona's, the way you would tie a bell to a wandering goat.

Marit felt the tug first and swore at it. Oona felt it and pulled back. Each pull set the other pulling harder, and the line sang over the water until the gulls came down to see what the noise was. By dusk the cord had gone slack in the middle, sagging into the reach, and neither sister would be the first to cut it.

In the morning they found the cord severed clean at the centre, a short red end left on each raft, and a pot of broth steaming on the shared step between their houses. Tessaly never said who cut it. The reel is still in her creel, and the thread is still red.
