Scallop shell on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A single scallop shell is drawn in a thin, uniform outline with radiating ribs and a flared base. The ink is a dark grey-purple, and the shell is shown in one line weight with no shading or fill. The shell sits centrally on the upper back against a softly blurred outdoor background of yellow foliage.

The night porter on Ward Seven kept a scallop shell in his coat pocket, and nobody on the wards ever asked him why. He said it had come out of the sea at Whitby the summer his mother died, and that a shell keeps the tide it was born in. When the corridor lights dimmed after midnight he would take it out and run his thumb along the ribs, counting them the way other men counted beads.

A girl called Ada, nine years old and kept in for her heart, asked him one night what the fan-shaped thing was for. He told her the sea makes a shell with ribs so the water can find its way back out of the wind. Ada said that was a silly reason, and he agreed it was, but he let her hold the shell anyway. She fell asleep with it under her pillow, and the nurses let it stay there.
When the lift broke on the third night of the storm, he carried old Mrs Pryce down four flights of stairs to the x-ray room on his back, because the trolley would not fit the stairwell. She was light as a bundle of kindling and cold to the bone. At the bottom of the stairs he stopped to get his breath, and she tapped his shoulder and asked him to show her the shell. He did. She said her husband had carried one just like it from the same beach.
In the morning he found the shell on the windowsill of the day room, turned to face the east, where the first grey light was catching its ribs. Ada had put it there herself, she said, so the sea could see the hospital was still open.
