Crescent moon wand and R2-D2 on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
The image shows the lower legs of a person with several colour tattoos. A pink crescent moon wand sits on the shin, and below it on the other calf is an R2-D2 droid with a BEEP banner, both with dark outlines. Larger scrollwork and a pale mountain-like design with yellow and green accents fill the remaining skin, on a plain light background.

The combi oven started its beeping at half five, three rising notes and then a long, put-upon pause, the way it always did when the steam door had been opened too often. Dougie, our chief engineer, swore it was a fault code. I swore it was a grumpy little man who wanted his supper, and he had been telling me so since we left Harwich. Forty covers were booked for the captain's dinner and the halibut was already thawing in the sink.

I went to the drawer where I kept the things nobody else would touch: a rusted bottle opener, a bent skewer, and the long pink whisk my sister had given me the year she moved to Lowestoft. Its handle ended in a little silver crescent, the sort of thing you'd only buy as a joke. I tapped the crescent against the oven door, once, twice, the way you'd knock on a stubborn friend's window. The beeping stopped mid-note.
Dougie came in wiping his hands and stared at me. 'You can't fix a control board with a whisk, Nell.' 'I didn't fix it,' I said. 'I asked nicely.' He muttered something about superstition and went back down to the engine room, where, I later heard, he spent an hour with a multimeter and found nothing at all.
We served the captain his halibut at eight. The oven stayed quiet through the whole service, and every time I passed it I half expected a polite little chirp, a thank you from a machine that had decided to behave. It never came, but I hung the whisk on the hook beside the ovens anyway, crescent facing out, in case the next order went wrong.
