Matching dagger tattoos on two hands
Traditional · Hand · Mixed · Photo
Two hands rest together, each showing a near-identical dagger tattoo on the back of the hand. The dagger has a green eye on a red-topped handle, a gold cross guard, a grey blade with black outlines, and a white banner ribbon wrapped around it, with small red drips near the tip. The shading is solid and the background is soft and out of focus, with partial tattoos visible at the top left and right edges.

Sit down on the upturned crate, love, the press is still warm and the wasps have had their share. Mind the windfalls, they're soft as old bread. My grandmother always told this one at harvest, and she had it from her own mother, who swore it was true because she'd been there when the ribbon was tied.

There were two sisters, Ada and Maud Pryce, who grew up in the row of Costard trees behind the farmhouse. When they were girls they swore an oath at the far hedge on their grandfather's dagger, a short blade with a painted eye set in the handle to watch over promises. They tied a strip of white linen round the grip and made a pact never to lie to each other. Then they pricked their hands on the point, pressed them together, and went in for their tea as if nothing had happened.
Years later, when their father was buried under the big pear, Maud sold the best of the crop to the market men behind Ada's back, and Ada found the ledger in the cider house. She walked straight to the hedge and drove the dagger into the bark so hard the blade rang. Maud came out looking for her, and neither spoke for a long while. At last Maud said the eye had seen everything. Ada said, then let it watch you say sorry.
Maud did, and that's the whole of it. The dagger is still in that hedge, rusted to the colour of the leaves, and the linen has gone grey. The apples from that row taste sweet on one side and sour on the other, and nobody pulls them, because it's their sisters' fruit. Here, have one. Mind the bruise.
