Crescent moon with dotwork on forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small crescent moon sits on the forearm, with fine-line ornamental patterns and a lotus-like flower along the inner curve. The centre of the moon holds a stippled dotwork glyph, with bold line edges framing the shape. The ink is black on a plain background of skin and a dark patterned fabric.

Sit closer, all of you, and mind the lamp, because my knees have opinions tonight. Yes, the moon is thin. Thin as a paring from a cook's knife, and that is exactly how Ruma Lal found her, hanging over the harbour at Sabira's Quay, the night she came down the chandler's stairs with a pot of ink and no money at all.

The chandler's wife, Oyelaran, had promised her a bed for a month if she inked the lanterns for the ferry. Ruma did not ink lanterns. She painted lotus flowers, because nothing grew in that salt-stung city but gulls and complaints, and people will pay good coin to see what they cannot have. Every petal took an hour of dots, tap by tap with a bone needle, until the paper looked like frost on a window.
On the last night of the month the moon swelled over the water, and a boy came running up the quay shouting that the ferry had sailed without its lanterns. Ruma ran with him. She carried the pot in both hands, and ink spilled across her knuckles like a scatter of stars, and the lotus on the lantern bloomed in the wrong order, its petals folding inward toward a little seed of darkness at the centre.
The captain held that lantern up to the moon and said nothing for a long while. Then he laughed, and paid her double, and told her the sea does not care for perfect flowers. So if you see a crescent tonight that looks cut from lace, don't be fooled. It's only a lantern that drifted home, and a girl who never once asked the moon for money.
