Full moon on the upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A full moon is tattooed inside a solid black outline, with its surface shown through dark grey patches and fine stippled dots. The lighter areas are left as bare skin, which gives the disc a soft, rounded appearance. The circle sits centrally against plain skin in a close, straight-on photo.

Imin had been counting nights since the barley came in, pressing a reed stylus into wet clay tablets in the cool room behind the temple granary. The priest Nabu-zer wanted the day of the full moon marked before the canals were opened, and Imin was the only scribe who could read the old signs without squinting. Each evening he climbed to the roof, held up a palm, and watched the silver edge swell.

On the twelfth night the moon rose so round and close that its dark patches looked like spilt ink on a bowl of milk. Imin's grandmother had told him those were seas, and that a fisherman who sailed too far onto them would never come home. He did not believe her, but he drew them anyway, dot by dot, in the margin of his tablet, because the grain had to be measured against something that did not change.
Nabu-zer climbed up with a lamp and frowned at the drawing. "The moon is fuller than your count says," he said. "Do you think the gods shave a night off for you?" Imin pointed to a small pale ring near the lower edge, like a thumbprint pressed into soft clay. "It is not the moon that is late. It is us."
The priest laughed, then stopped, and they stood together watching the disc clear the rooftops. By morning the tablet was dry and the canals were open, and the count was right to the day.
