Minimal curled line tattoo on forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small, simple tattoo on the inner forearm, showing one continuous black outline that loops into a curled, spiral-like shape with a tapered tail at the top. The linework is solid and even with no shading, and the ink is uniform black. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame against plain, pale skin, with soft fabric visible at the edges of the image.

The boarding house at Porthkennick had nine rooms, and the tenth was the one at the top of the stairs where the window faced out past the harbour wall. Mrs Trewin kept its key on a length of tarred string around her neck, and she never let it. Ada swept the landings every morning, and every morning the door of that room was shut a little more firmly than the night before.

Ada found the shell in March, after a storm had turned the bay inside out. It was a whelk the size of a child's fist, and it sat on the sill of the locked room as if someone meant to come back for it. When she held it to her ear it did not sound of the sea. It sounded of someone counting in a low voice, one turn at a time. Mrs Trewin took it from her at once and put it back where it lay.
By April the shell had grown a thin tail at its open mouth, and it had turned itself a quarter round on the sill, pointing towards the water. Mrs Trewin said nothing, but she began leaving her boots by the door. Ada noticed the coil was one turn looser each week, as though something inside were working its way out to leave.
On the first still evening of May, Ada carried the whelk down the shingle at low water and set it in a pool among the weed. The tail lifted and curled back on itself, once, twice, and then closed tight as a fist. Up at the house the tenth window stayed dark. Ada went home and swept the stairs, and nobody ever again tried the key.
