Down the spine of Sorrow Ridge there were nine gates, and each gate was a shape the old surveyors could trust. First came the sharp point, the triangle that turns you down into the valley where the water sleeps. Then the moon-circle, which tells you the ground will hold your weight if the frost has not come yet.

Keep going. The little diamond after that is the one that lied to my grandmother's grandmother. It looked like a door and was only a hollow in the rock, and she walked into it at dusk with a goat and a bag of salt. The goat came home. She did not, and afterwards the diamond was cut smaller so no one would mistake it again.

Now the dots. Count them with your thumb. Every dot was a campfire where a surveyor stopped to rest, and the thin line joining them was the path a person must not leave. Keep to the line and the ridge keeps you. Step off it and the ridge forgets your name.

So that is the column. Nine shapes, one road, and at the bottom the last diamond, drawn heavy so that a stranger reading it knows the road ends among people. Now blow out the lamp and go to sleep, and tomorrow we will walk it with our eyes shut and our feet on the stone.
