Crescent moon with mandala and dangling ornaments
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A crescent moon filled with a scalloped, mandala-like pattern of fine dots and lines, with a row of small dots trailing beside it. Three chains hang from the lower curve, each ending in a diamond-shaped drop. The linework is fine and even, shaded in black and grey on smooth skin, with the design centred against a soft, plain background.

The lamplighter's daughter in Veyl had promised the river she would climb the tall stair before the first frost, and the river did not forgive debts. So when the ice began to skin the canals, she took her grandmother's silver comb, a coil of thread, and a bag of seeds from the orchard wall, and set off past the salt pans toward the crescent-shaped weir where the old women said the moon came down to drink.

She found it sitting in the reeds like a bowl turned on its side, its inner curve lacy with pale scallops, each one stitched with a hundred tiny dots by hands that had been dead for longer than the town had kept its records. Three chains hung from its lower edge, and at the end of each swung a little diamond of tin, catching what light there was. Beside it, a line of dark pebbles marked the way back to the water, one for each night she had let slip.
"You have brought seed," the moon said, though it had no mouth she could see. "Plant it on the weir and I will show you the stair."
She planted the seeds in the cracks of the stone, one for every scallop she could count, and sang the counting song her grandmother had sung over the bread. By morning the chains had grown green and the tin drops had become small bright fruit that rang when the wind moved them. The stair rose out of the reeds, pale as a fingernail, and at its top the lamplighter's daughter could see all of Veyl laid out like a hand of cards, every canal lit, every window open, the frost held back for one more week.
