Ornate crescent moon on upper back

Geometric · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A crescent moon sits on the upper back, its outer edge filled with a repeating geometric pattern and its inner curve decorated with swirling scrollwork and small leaf-like motifs. The linework is fine and dense in black ink, with no shading or colour, and the crescent is centred in the frame against plain pale skin with dark hair at the top edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lacemaker of Skerrow had a bobbin for every hour of the night, and she worked by the window so the moon could see her hands. Her thread was linen spun so fine that the fishermen's wives said it would pass through a gull's eye. Each month she set out a pattern on the pillow, a crescent with its outer rim knotted in triangles like the scales of a herring, and each month she began again at the horns.

Her son, Tam, went out with the Mary Ellen in the autumn and did not come back. The town said the sea had taken him. She did not argue. She only kept working, and the crescent grew, and when the rim was finished she began on the inside curve, where the lace turned to scrollwork and small leaves, the way frost climbs a pane.

On the night the moon was thinnest, a knock came at the door. A boy stood there with wet hair and a rope burn on his wrist, holding a scrap of lace that had caught on the harbour wall. It was her own work, one of the leaves from the inner curve, though she had sent none down to the harbour. He said the moon had dropped it into the water and the tide had carried it in.

She took the scrap, looked at it a long while, and then sat down to finish the curve. She left one leaf open, no bigger than a thumbnail, and tied off the thread. "For the next one who comes back," she said to nobody, and the lamp went out.
