Flour's up again, so the tin loaves are smaller. I've kept the white cob for the Saturday market, and the rye goes out to the men at the depot who never say thank you but always come back. Nobody asks for the mountain loaf anymore, the one with the pine-tree scoring, but I still cut it every morning out of habit, and the blade drags a little through the cold.

Last night I scored a crescent on the bread for you before it went into the oven, two curves with a dent where your chin would be. It came out all gold and blistered at the edges, and I stood there in my apron watching it cool on the rack, thinking you'd have laughed at how lopsided it was.

Come home when the boat's in. The sun's up before the shutters now, and I'll keep the kettle on for you. Love, Mum
