The tide tables had been wrong for three weeks, and Maud Pargeter was the only one in the harbour office who would say so out loud. She sat with the lamp pulled low over the ledger, a mug of cold tea at her elbow, and ran her thumb down the column of heights the way her father had taught her, counting under her breath. Outside, the gulls had stopped complaining. Even the boats were quiet.

At half past one a boy came up the stairs carrying a bucket. He said a crab had come up through the drain outside the fish market and would not stop walking in circles. Maud looked at it: a green shore crab, the shell scratched pale along one side, turning on the same spiral path over the scrubbed floor. She knew that circle. It was the one the sea wall had taken on the night of the big storm, when the water came back in a loop and nobody could say where it had gone.

She tipped the crab onto the wet steps and watched it go, sideways and certain, down toward the slipway. Then she took her pencil and drew a moon in the margin of the ledger, a thin curve shaded blue, then teal, then green, the way the water went before dawn. Inside the horn of it she drew a spiral, round and round, until the lead pressed through the paper.

When she checked the column again the numbers had settled. The tide would turn at four, exactly where she had always known it would, and she corrected the last figure with one neat stroke. Down on the slipway the crab had found the water. Maud let the lamp burn down and walked home by the dark road, counting lamp posts instead of waves.
