The rain had been coming off the moor since dawn, and by eleven the cobbles of Thrale Market were running like a slate roof. Dad sold eels from the third stall on the left, where the canopy never quite kept the drip off, and he had me counting coins into the tin because my fingers were quicker than his in the cold.

The man who came with the trestle table had a roll of tracing paper under one arm and a face like wet bread. He wanted to know which way the lane ran when it flooded. Dad told him the water always took the same three routes out: down past the Co-op, under the arch by the bell tower, and round the back of the butcher's, where the drains had been choked since spring. Then he drew them in the condensation on the scale, three curls turning in on themselves, and the man laughed and said that was the trouble with towns. Everything looped back to where it started.
He bought a bag of cockles and asked me to walk him to the arch. We went the long way, round the butcher's, and the runoff had found the gutter and was turning in a small grey eye beside the drain. I watched the three streams meet at the corner, fold into one, and pour out under the arch exactly the way they always had.
When I got back, Dad had the tin open and was counting. Did he pay, I asked. He held up a coin, damp and warm from his palm. Paid in full, he said, and left us the map. The tracing paper was stuck to the scale, three inward curls smudged into one grey smear, and by closing time the rain had taken even that.
