Fine line branch on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a thin, curving branch with tiny leaves and a few buds sits on the skin at the top of the back, just below the neck. The linework is delicate and even, with the design shaded in solid black ink and no colour. The tattoo is centred in the frame above the neckline of a cream top, with a plain background.

The wedding was already half over when Hanne Corrie noticed the cutting was gone from the kitchen windowsill. It had been a thin green switch of hawthorn, no longer than a finger, and she had meant to give it to the groom before the vows. Instead the bride's grandmother had taken it, saying a branch that bent that way ought to be planted by someone who would stay.

Hanne went out past the trestle tables to the lane behind the barn. The groom's brother was crouched by the ditch with his good coat over his arm, pushing a stick into the wet earth. He had the look of a man who had been handed a secret and did not want it. "It only needs a little water," he said, without turning round. "Mother says the buds will come if it's left alone."
They did not speak of the bride's family, or of the years the two households had spent not speaking across the parish boundary. Hanne knelt and pressed the soil flat with her palm. A few leaves were already opening along the bent stem, pale as the lace on the bride's sleeve, and she counted three buds before the light went.
When they walked back the fiddles had started. Nobody asked where they had been. By the next spring the hedge at the end of the lane had a new gap filled with a stem that curved over the ditch like a question, and the old women said it had never once needed watering.
