Cross and heart on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a Latin-style cross passing through an open heart outline, drawn in thin black linework. It sits on the side of an ankle against plain skin, with the heel and a dark surface visible in the lower part of the frame. The ink is solid and uniform, with no shading or colour, and the tattoo occupies a small area near the centre of the photograph.

Dear Tomasz,

The rain has been at the Saturday market since six, and Mrs Okonedo's awning has come down twice on the fish. I sold the last of the bread rolls at half price just to be rid of them. You would have laughed. You always said I could sell sea water to the gulls if I asked them nicely.
Yesterday a man came to the stall with a pair of brass scales he wanted mended, and he kept touching his hand where a ring used to be. I did not ask. I wrote his name on the back of a receipt and told him Thursday. Then he asked whether I did repairs on anything else, and I said only clocks and the odd broken heart. It was a joke, and he did not smile, so I think it was a bad one.
Here is the thing I have been meaning to tell you. Papa's old cross, the one with the chip out of its arm, is in the drawer under the till. I had it melted down by the jeweller on Calder Street, and he made me a small thing from the silver, a cross running straight through an open heart. It is as thin as a hair. I wear it nowhere, but I keep it in my apron pocket, and when the rain gets into my shoes it is the first thing my fingers find.
Come home at Easter. The stall will still be here, and so will the rain.
Love, Ada
