Small black cross on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot is photographed from the side, resting against a pale wall with wet skin and black toenail polish visible. A small black cross sits on the outer ankle near the heel, drawn with thin, even linework and solid black ink. The composition is simple, with the tattoo as the only mark on the skin and a soft, neutral background.

The ferryman's widow kept the tin of lamp black on the windowsill, between the matches and the clock that ran four minutes slow. Each spring, before the river came up brown over the lower meadows, she went down to the landing with a brush and marked the things that had to be counted: the gate posts, the keel of the punt, the flat stone where the drowned were laid out for the coroner from the county town, though nobody had been laid there since the war.

Her son Alec was nine that year and thought the marking was a game. He followed her along the towpath with the jar and a rag, and when she bent to make a small cross on the bridge-keeper's old tarred rope, he asked her what it was for. She said the river could not count past a cross, so a thing with one on it was a thing already claimed, and the water would go round it.
The rain came in March, three days of it, and the river rose in the night. In the morning the widow was in her bed with her hands folded and the clock stopped at a quarter past five, and the punt was gone from the landing. Alec went down alone with the tin in his coat. The flat stone was under four feet of water, so he waded to the rope where it met the post and painted a cross on it, thick and black, the way she had shown him.
The ferry crossed back at dawn with the coroner's man aboard, and nobody was lost on the water that day. The rope has been replaced three times since, and every new one has been marked by Alec's hand before it was tied.
