Heart with semicolon and cross on a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black tattoo on the top of a bare foot shows a heart outline formed by a curved line, with a semicolon sitting on its right-hand edge and a small cross inside the heart. The linework is bold and uniform with solid black fill, and there is no colour. The close, slightly angled shot sits the tattoo centrally against a textured carpet, with the toes visible below.

Dear Tom, the wheel came off its axle again on Thursday at Halstead, and Mr Pettifer swore at it for an hour while the kids in the queue sang the same two lines over and over. We're in Essex now, pitched behind the sugar-floss van on a field that smells of cow and diesel. I've been running the coconut shy every afternoon, and I'm getting good at telling which lads want to win and which only want to be seen trying.

The painter, old Ada Fenn, finished the gondola doors with a heart on each, red as a post box. She wouldn't let me touch the little cross inside one until she'd checked the spacing with a length of string. I asked her why she'd put a semicolon on the edge of the heart, of all the marks in the world. She said a semicolon is what you use when the sentence could have stopped and you chose to keep going, and she'd rather the fair was full of half-finished sentences than one that says full stop.
I sat on the caravan step that night thinking about that, and about how every letter I've sent you ends in a full stop, as if I'd already decided how the story goes. So here is the semicolon: I'm staying on with the fair through the autumn; Pettifer has offered me the wheel-man's job and I said yes. Write back to the Chelmsford post office and it'll catch me before we move on.
