The wind had been at the dandelion clocks since Tuesday, and Ada Pell was still picking seeds out of the rhubarb when the post boy came up the lane with a card from Carlisle in her sister's cramped hand. She read it standing, then sat down on the water butt with the card in her lap.

Winifred had always kept the green cord their mother used to tie the sweet peas, a loop knotted round two bamboo canes so it made a cross with a heart folded into its middle. Ada fetched it from the shed hook and found the canes gone soft and grey, the knots still tight. 'You keep the cross,' Winifred had written, 'and I'll keep the seed.' It was the first thing she had asked of Ada in forty years.

Ada walked the length of the plot with the cord in her apron pocket, counting the old seedheads that had gone to white bristle, each one like a clock someone had forgotten to wind. She pressed one between her palms and blew. The seeds went off over the hedge in a hurry, catching the low sun, every one of them spinning towards the church roof where the rooks were gathering.

By dusk she had laid the cross on the windowsill with the cord looped round it, and a single seedhead stuck to the glass where the draught had pinned it. She left the sash open an inch. Carlisle was a long train ride, and Winifred would have to walk the last mile herself, but the seeds would be there before her.
