Solid black cross tattoo with two parallel lines running across the wrist, in a black and grey geometric style on a clenched hand.

Cross and parallel lines on a wrist

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black cross sits centrally on the wrist, with two thin horizontal lines running either side of it and broken where they meet the cross. The linework is crisp and the ink is an even, flat black with no shading. The tattoo fills the upper part of the frame against a plain grey background, with the clenched hand below it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow came over the top of the pass before the lorry had finished its climb, so you pulled in beside the stone cross where the two roads meet and let the engine tick. Someone had hung a tin lantern from its arm years ago. The lantern was empty, but the hook still held. Below, the tarmac ran away in two grey ribbons, each with a faded white line down its edge, and both lines stopped dead at the foot of the cross as if the road had been told to wait.

Your father used to say the lines broke there because the road had to bow to something older. You thought that was nonsense at nine, sitting in the back of the Morris eating boiled sweets, and you still half thought it at twenty-two when you drove this way with a van full of tools and no money. Mrs Acheson, who ran the café at the bottom of the hill, had a different story: a cart went over the edge in 1931, and the council painted the gap so drivers would slow down. Nobody believed either of them, and nobody ever repainted it.

You got out with the flask. The wind was coming off the scree in long, flat pushes, and the cross stood square against it, black and unbothered. You poured tea into the lid and held it for a while without drinking. When the snow thinned enough to see the valley, the two lines picked up again on the far side of the crossing, straight and white, carrying on as though nothing had happened to them at all.
