Black cross on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black Latin cross with straight, even lines sits on the outer forearm, shown in a close crop of the arm and hand. The cross is set slightly above the wrist and is the only mark on the skin. The background is a dark knit fabric and a denim sleeve, with soft, neutral lighting.

The galley lamp swung on its chain each time the Brenda Rose took a sea on the quarter, and Mags Tolley had long since stopped fighting it. She stirred the pot of tea with her hip braced against the range rail and listened to the hull complain. Forty-one days out of Grimsby. The catch in the hold was starting to smell of its own reasons, and the men had stopped asking when they'd be home.

Beside the cook's board, scored into the painted bulkhead, ran a column of marks she had made every evening since the first trip. Short upright strokes, five to a bundle, the way her father had taught her to count trawl hauls. The sixth stroke always crossed the other five. Harold Lusk, the skipper, pretended not to watch her make them. He had never asked what they were for, and nobody aboard needed telling that a galley keeps a tally.
On the night the boy Sol Carrick went over the rail, the sea was flat enough to see the lights of the next trawler on the horizon. Nobody could say when he'd gone. Sol had asked her the week before whether the marks were for the living or the dead, and she had told him to peel the potatoes. At first light she took the skewer from its hook and made the crossing stroke, slow and even, and the men who came in for their porridge looked at it and sat down without a word.
When the Humber light finally showed through the spray, the lamp hung still for the first time in weeks. Mags wiped the board clean and left the cross where it was.
