Small anchor tattoo on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of an inner wrist and forearm, with a small anchor tattoo at the centre of the wrist. The anchor has a ring at the top, a vertical shank, a crossbar and curved flukes, drawn in thin light lines. The background is solid black, which makes the pale ink stand out clearly against the skin.

Sit closer, the fire's only good for the front of you. Sixty-one boats went out of Porthkennack that spring, and the Gull Mary was the last to clear the bar, because her skipper, Sam Jago, would not leave until his youngest had counted every fathom of the warp twice. You'll think that foolish. Wait.

The fog came off the Manacles in a single breath, thick as wet wool, and the men lost their marks on the church tower and the lamp at the head of the pier. Sam had his father's old iron anchor on the Gull Mary, the shank worn pale where the rope had rubbed it for forty years. He dropped it in the lee of the reef, and it held. All night the men hung on and felt the tide trying to draw the hull onto the rocks. Sam took a stub of chalk from his pocket and drew the anchor on the slate by the wheel: a small ring at the top, a straight shank, a crossbar, two curved flukes. Each man copied it onto his own wrist with lamp soot, so they could check their bearings by touch in the dark, and the horn from the harbour kept them honest.
At first light they came in one by one, all sixty-one, and the harbour rang with men shouting names they'd thought lost. Sam's anchor stayed on the reef, the warp cut clean. Ruth went down at low water with a bucket and a sack, and there it was, the ring just breaking the weed, pale as a gull's wing. She never told her father she'd gone to fetch it. She only brought back the chalk.
