Cal Brennan scratched a mark into the wheelhouse beam of every boat in the fleet, a small upright cross with the short bar set high, cut with the point of a fid. He said it kept the nets from fouling on the wreck off Pell Bank. Nobody believed him, and nobody asked him to stop. When he went over the side in the February gale, the boats came home with the marks still there, and the slip filled with men who did not know what to say.

This morning Tom shows you the beam of the Marguerite. Someone has added a second mark beside Cal's, shallower, a thumb's width away. You know whose hand it is, because Tom's knife always skips on the downstroke. He says he did it at midnight and is not sure whether it is for Cal or for himself. You tell him the nets will manage either way.

You go below, unhook the lamp, and breathe on the cold glass until the fog clears. Then you draw the same small cross in the condensation, short bar high, and watch it run down the pane towards the harbour lights before the first gull lands on the rail.
