Cross with cursive script and leaves

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black tattoo of a cross, with bold straight bars and a thin cursive word running vertically through the centre, finished with two small leaf-like loops. The linework is crisp and solid black, with no shading or colour. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame against plain, evenly lit skin.

The marker had been nailed to the bulkhead of Greenhouse Four for longer than anyone aboard the Halvard could account for, two straight bars of scorched oak crossing a pole, and someone had burned a word down its length in a looping hand. Tamsin Roe ran her thumb over the letters while the grow-lamps hummed overhead. The middle of the word had worn smooth from handling, and the two small leaves at its foot had been cut so carefully that they still looked like they might open.

"It's a seed line," said Osei from the sluice gate, not looking up from his clipboard. "Some founder's favourite pea. Log it and move on."

Tamsin did not log it. She had spent three cycles cataloguing the stock, and she knew the ledger by heart. No line in it matched those letters, and the handwriting was older than the ship's first paint. She took the marker down, carried it to the far bench where the soil was dark and wet, and pressed its foot into a tray of grit.

By the next shift, the bottom leaf had split. A pale green tongue stood between the two burned loops, no taller than her smallest fingernail. Osei came over to see what the fuss was and went quiet. Tamsin watched the shoot lean toward the nearest lamp, slowly, the way a person turns to hear a name called from another room. She wrote the date in the margin of her notebook, then, after a moment, the word itself, letter by letter, the way it had been written.
