Small black cross on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small black cross is drawn in thin, single-weight linework on the forearm, sitting towards the lower part of the arm. The arm is raised with the hand clenched, set against a dark navy background and blue fabric. The image is in black ink only, with the skin tone and dim lighting giving a simple, low-key composition.

The road had no name on the county map, only a number, and Ruth had driven it so many times that the tanker knew the dips before she did. Past the salt flat the tarmac gave out and the gravel began its long argument with the tyres. She counted the posts as she went. Nineteen, twenty, then the one with the cross.

Someone had cut it into the wood years ago, two lines crossing at a clean right angle, the way a surveyor marks a benchmark he means to return to. Nobody had returned. The paint had gone and the grain had silvered. Ruth had never asked who put it there, and the bleached wood never offered an answer, so she slowed to walking pace each time and let the dust roll ahead of her.

Today a boy stood beside the post with a clipboard, sketching the line of the fence against the sky. He was young enough to still wear his father's hat. "Is this the one they want?" he asked, and held up his page. Ruth looked at the small cross he had drawn in the corner, a single stroke each way, and felt the old pull of the road.

"It's the one," she said. "Mark it on your map. Then go home before the wind comes up." He drew a second cross beside the first, a little crooked, and grinned at it as if he had made something true. Ruth put the tanker in gear and watched him shrink in the mirror until the heat took him.
