Small cross tattoo on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small, thin black cross sits on the inner wrist of a raised arm, with a dark sleeve covering the forearm below. The linework is fine and solid, with no visible shading, and the image is greyscale so colour is not a factor. The tattoo sits near the centre of the frame against a soft, blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lamp at Hob's Cross had been dark since Michaelmas, and the carriers had started swearing at it on the Thursday run. Nobody in Ashby Fold fancied the climb onto the moor in February, so Tobias Reeve took it, a tin of paraffin under one arm and his sister's shawl wrapped round the wick box to keep the wind off.

The post stood where two packhorse tracks crossed, a squat grey stone with a cross cut into its top, the arms worn nearly smooth by weather. Tobias had walked past it a hundred times without looking. Tonight he hung the lamp from the crossbar, trimmed the wick, and when the flame took, the light slid across the cut lines so that the cross stood out black on the grey, thin and certain as a pen stroke. He stood a while with his cold hands in his armpits, looking at it.

When he got back down, Mrs Tennant at the inn asked what he'd seen. He said only the stone. She told him her husband had struck a match beside that cross in the snow of sixty-one and found his way home by it, when every other mark on the moor had gone under.

At dawn he went back up to put the lamp out. Someone had been there before him. Beside the old cross, scratched into the stone with something sharp, was a smaller one no bigger than his thumbnail, the lines still bright with grit. He never learned who had made it, and he didn't ask. He turned the wick down, wiped the glass clean, and walked home with the light still in his eyes.
