Crossed arrows with feathers on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows two crossed arrows with feathered fletching, one at the top and two near the top corners, with a fine black line running through strings of beads to dotwork arrowheads at the bottom. The feathers at the top corners are filled with bands of red, orange, yellow, green and blue, while the central feather and the linework are in black. The design sits on the outer upper arm and is set against a plain background with a blue sleeveless top visible.

The rain came in sideways through the lock gates last night, so I'm writing this on the back hatch with the lamp balanced on the coal scuttle. Dobbs at the tackle shop in Castleford finally agreed to sell me a bag of goose and pheasant feathers, though he wanted a shilling more than they were worth and a promise that I'd stop calling his ferret Admiral.

I spent the afternoon on the towpath with Pa's old fletching jig, cutting shafts from ash I'd found by the weir. You'll laugh, but I dyed three feathers in the galvanised bucket using madder from Mrs Akroyd's kitchen, then a dash of marigold for the yellow. The red bled into the orange like a sunset that couldn't decide. Two of them took the colour in bands, stripes like the painted rail on the Wren, and the middle one I left plain black, the way Pa always wanted it.
I've bound the two arrows and crossed them where the strings meet, with a run of jet beads on each line. Nothing has been shot from this cabin since the summer you went south, but the heads I cut from a broken tin lid have the same little diamond shape as the sign over the Ferrybridge inn. I think he'd have liked them. They look like something to be carried, not fired.
Come up at Easter if you can. Bring the good linen thread and I'll show you the knot Pa used. Your loving sister, Nell.
