LEGO Darth Vader holding a red lightsaber

Other · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo of a blocky LEGO minifigure of Darth Vader, with a black helmet, cape and boxy limbs, raising a red lightsaber diagonally up to the left. The figure is shaded in black and grey with white highlights on its edges, giving it a glossy, three-dimensional look. Part of a second black and grey tattoo, showing a figure with a red detail, is visible at the top right against plain skin.

Nan kept the spare keys in a biscuit tin, so when the lift on our stairwell broke for the third time that month, I had to carry the shopping up fourteen flights with the bags cutting into my fingers. Mrs Okafor from nine was already on the landing, wrestling a pram with one wheel that squealed like a gull every time it turned.

Halfway up, on the concrete ledge beside the bin chute, something black caught the light from the stairwell window. It was a little plastic man, no taller than my thumb, with a helmet as square as a brick and a cape stuck to his leg with chewing gum. He still had a red lightsaber clutched in his blocky hand, the handle chewed pale where some kid had clearly fought the Empire every night on the way to bed.

I knocked on Dev's door on six, because Dev had lost his whole Death Star set in the summer and cried about it for a week. He turned the figure over in his palm like it might explode. We argued on the landing for ten minutes about whether finders keepers counted if you were fifteen. In the end we propped him on the windowsill by the lift doors, lightsaber pointing up at the dented steel, and went back to our flats.

The next morning he was gone. In his place sat a sheet of paper folded into a square, with a crayon drawing of a small black figure holding a red stick, and underneath, in wobbly capitals: HE IS MINE. THANK YOU FOR KEEPING HIM. RUBY, FLAT 22.
