Crouching cougar on the side of the body

Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic cougar crouches low with its head lowered and its tail curling upward, shown in a three-quarter view. The fur is built up with soft grey shading and darker tones along the legs and back, with fine detail around the eyes and whiskers. The black and grey work sits across the curve of the skin, with the animal's body filling most of the frame.

Sunday, wet through. The cougar came down to the lower pasture again before light, the same one Mrs Pryce swears she hears screaming up at the quarry in March. The trail camera on the ash tree has caught nothing but rain streaks and a fox looking embarrassed about itself.

Thursday I found her tracks by the sheep shed. Four toes, no claw marks, and the prints pressed deep where she had dropped her weight to crouch. Beside them a long smudge through the mud, as if someone had dragged a stick. Mr Osei from the feed merchant reckons she's been fattening herself on lambs. I told him she has been living on rabbits and spite, and that the lambs are safe so long as nobody leaves a gate open.

Last night I went out with the torch and no gun, only the lamp and my boots. At the paddock gate she was lying flat, belly to the wet grass, head low, eyes fixed on the light in the barn window. I stood still and she didn't run. She watched me the way you'd watch a man who has knocked at the wrong door, then lifted her tail once, slow, like a question mark, and went up the hill into the rain.

I've stopped telling Pryce about the tracks. Tonight I'll leave the barn door open a crack and the lamp switched off, and see who comes down to wait for whom.
