A lioness rests her head over the shoulder area with three lion cubs arranged around her, one climbing near the top left and two below and to the right. The cubs were already on the fallen log when you reached the saddle of the pass, three of them stacked against each other like loaves left to prove, and their mother lay with her chin across the warm stone as if the mountain had been built for her to rest on. You stopped the goats with a click of the tongue and the bell on Tomas's old ewe fell silent. Below you the valley was going the colour of rust, and the cold would climb the slope within the hour.

She lifted her head at the sound and turned it slowly, the way a woman turns to see who has come into her kitchen. Her eyes were the colour of the dry grass. You waited for the rush of hooves or the sharp cough you had heard about in the village, but she only watched you. The smallest cub, the one with a dark smudge on its nose, climbed over its brothers and tumbled down into the tussocks at her side. She nudged it back under her foreleg without once looking away from you.

You understood then that she was not hunting. She was waiting for the others to come up the far path, and you were not the thing she was waiting for. So you turned the flock and took the long way round by the spring, the goats complaining the whole length of the ridge, and you did not look back until the bend hid the saddle.

From the lower shelf, with the first stars coming out over the peaks, you glanced back once. Four shapes sat against the pale rock, the big one settled like a boulder with her cubs fitted around her, and the smallest had its head resting on her paw. The wind moved through the grass around the log in long silver waves. Tomas would ask why you came down an hour late, and you would have no good answer, only the picture of a family asleep on a mountain that was not yours to keep.
